🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ This is not a drill. I wish it was, but it’s not. This video has been around since about 2008, but it's resurfaced and is circulating around on social media again. Some people attributed this Roseanne Barr, saying it was her voice, but this has been disproven.
Similar instances happen with people who believe critical thinking “opens the door to satanic attacks." (I grew up in evangelical churches. I'm not evangelical anymore, but that’s what church leaders told me as a kid. They use fear to control their congregations.)
Today with homophobia being propagated in state legislatures across the south, I would not be surprised at all if someone thinks this is a gay conspiracy. That's not necessarily what the person recording the video thinks, so with that being said, such things are what happens when the Republican party turns people’s identities into political culture wars. They push hate and fear so that they can gain more power and control. All they have to do is create some manufactured outrage, and the gullible Republican voters gobble it up like candy without any critical thinking whatsoever.
The ignorance and irrationality of these people is astounding. The churches I went to as a kid were openly anti-science and anti-education. They told me science is a "man made" construct used to trick people into leaving Christianity. They also told me knowledge is a "sin" as they referenced the story of Adam and Eve. And of course, they talked extensively about how homosexuality is a "choice to lust and live in sin."
If attraction is a choice, then that means all Christians who say this are attracted to both the opposite sex AND the same sex, because they made a "choice" to be attracted to the opposite sex. You can't have a choice if you're only attracted to one sex.
Because of their terror surrounding critical thinking and things don’t understand, conservative Christians, especially evangelicals, are easily manipulated and riled up into an angry frenzy who are frothing at the mouth over blatant lies told by their leaders. They love how that pitchfork feels in their hands.
They never fact check. The crowd that shrieks "I DO MUH OWN RESEARCH" is a complete failure at research. They are so easily manipulated due to being terrified about thinking critically that they gulp down all forms of propaganda. It feeds the fear centers their brains. They've become so accustomed to living in fear that they have to have fear in order to live. They crave it. Fear of hell, fear of the rapture (which, side note, was never mentioned by Jesus), fear of liberals, fear of gays, fear of transgender people, fear of black people, fear of science... I could go on and on.
Their leaders know exactly which buttons to push to get their puppets to do their bidding.
This is what happens when science and education are demonized by religious extremists. You can't control an educated population. But you can control them if you tap into their fear centers and convince them that knowledge and education "lead to spiritual warfare." Extremists weaponize religion to funnel hate and rage into their followers for everything those folks are incapable of understanding.
