Let's dive headfirst into the frustrating realm of bigotry, fueled by those who wield religion as a weapon to control lives, particularly the lives of the LGBTQ+ community. There is an avalanche of discriminatory legislation that's crashing through red-state legislatures like a wrecking ball with one goal: to shove Queer people back into the closet so religious bigots can pretend they don't exist.
Let's get something straight – or rather, not so straight: Queer people are human beings, deserving of the same rights, visibility, and dignity as anyone else. It's mind-boggling that in this day and age, we're still battling against archaic beliefs that seek to deny basic human rights to a whole community based off of weaponized religious beliefs. The audacity of so-called Christians to cherry-pick passages from their religious texts to justify discrimination is beyond maddening.
The anti-LGBTQ+ legislation cropping up is a calculated attempt to erase Queer people from the narrative of society. Why? Because religious extremists, particularly evangelicals, can't stand the fact that Queer individuals are living their lives openly and authentically. They want the LGBTQ+ community back in the closet, hidden away, so they can pretend that Queer folks are nothing more than a fever dream.
Let's talk about the irony dripping from the closets of the most vehement homophobes. The more hatred someone spews towards the LGBTQ+ community, the deeper in the closet they likely are themselves. It's a classic case of projection – instead of dealing with their own struggles with their identity, they deflect attention by attacking those who have the courage to live authentically. They refuse to face their own demons, so they project that hatred onto Queer people.
Homophobes are apparently incapable of separating human beings from their sexual orientation. They have sexualized the LGBTQ+ community to the point that when they see a gay person, all they can think about is gay sex. Newsflash: Queer people are more than their sexuality. They have careers, passions, families, and lives that extend far beyond what happens in their bedrooms. This hyper sexualization of Queer people starts in the churches where pastors and church leaders talk constantly about all the "dirty, nasty gay sex" that gay people are having.
And let's not forget the classic deflection tactic of "protecting the children." Homophobes love to hide behind this excuse, claiming that acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ+ individuals will somehow corrupt the minds of innocent kids. But here's the truth: children don't naturally sexualize the world around them the way homophobic adults do. Children only see love, acceptance, and authenticity – qualities that many homophobic individuals would benefit from embracing.
The frustrating reality is that these bigots are using their fear and ignorance to shape policy. They've infiltrated state legislatures and policy making. They are actively working to strip away the rights of a whole community based on bigoted beliefs and personal fear. It's time for society to stand up and say enough is enough.
We must reject the notion that one's religious beliefs give them a free pass to discriminate against others. We must also reject the idea that Christianity, or any religious beliefs, should shape policy. The very first amendment establishing the separation of church and state clearly says that there should be no laws respecting an establishment of religion. People cannot have freedom of religion if they don't have freedom from religion.
We must dismantle the legislative walls being erected that push Queer people back into the shadows. We must expose the hypocrisy of those who preach about protecting the sanctity of children while actively trying to build a culture of hate.
In the end, the fight for equality, visibility, and dignity for the LGBTQ+ community is a fight for basic human rights. It's time to break down the barriers constructed by bigotry, fear, and hate.
