We have some bad news for evangelicals.
The Christian Bible describes Jesus, whom they claim to worship, as a bleeding heart liberal. He had a radically liberal message for that time. He loved and advocated for the poor- even going so far as to say the kingdom of heaven is for the poor, the meek, the downtrodden.
According to the Christian Bible evangelicals claim to follow, Jesus loved those living in poverty, the disabled, the widowed, the orphaned, the oppressed, and all other groups that the people of that time marginalized. He hung out with thieves and prostitutes. He broke bread with those who were so poor that they couldn't afford to eat every day. He welcomed immigrants with open arms.
All of those people are exactly who American evangelicals hate. They hate the poor. They hate the disabled. They especially hate immigrants and anyone with brown skin. Evangelicals would demand Jesus to go back to his own country the moment they saw his brown skin. They are repulsed by the disabled. They especially hate women, and their hatred of Democrats (and especially liberals) practically causes evangelicals to froth at the mouth. They oppress the oppressed even more. They shun the marginalized to the outer fringes of society. They stomp on anyone they hate.
They hate everyone that Jesus loved.
And the people of Jesus' time absolutely despised Jesus for it. They were enraged that he refused to hate the people that they hated. And according to the Christian Bible, their rage and their hatred for Jesus led to his slaughter.
If Jesus were alive and on earth right now, evangelicals would crucify him all over again. They would be filled with fury that Jesus would love everyone that they hate. He had a bleeding heart, a soft heart, and the message in the Christian Bible that echoes over and over again is to love one another, and to take care of those living in poverty, those who are less fortunate.
They would be disgusted with Jesus' softness. They would rage when he wouldn't condemn women to hell who have had reproductive services. They would decide Jesus was too "feminine" and too weak. And just like the people of Jesus' time, they would want a stronger warrior like Barabas, not the gentle-lamb nature of Jesus.
Evangelicals can't even love others enough to wear a piece of cloth on their face for a 15-30 minute store trip. Evangelicals storm school board meetings, shrieking about how masks are "demonic." The only thing demonic about masks is evangelicals' view of them. They demand the immunocompromised to stay home while they mock them for being scared. They are public menaces, intimidating, harassing, bullying, and threatening everyone who isn't like them. Even children.
Evangelicals worship money, power, and control more than they worship the Jesus they claim to follow. They want to punish and shame everyone around them. Punish the poor. Punish women and blame them for men's "sins." And especially punish women who get pregnant. Punish people of color. Punish immigrants. Punish children who are born into poverty. Punish the disabled.
Their rage, hatred, and quest for power are what drive them. Evangelicals in America hate everyone who is not like them. They are nothing like the Christ they claim to worship.
The liberal agenda that they hate so much is more like their Christ than they are. Tax the rich, destroy the patriarchy, dismantle purity culture, create social safety nets for the poor, fight income inequality, free universal healthcare, uphold women's body autonomy, make college education free to help fight poverty, establish and protect human rights for everyone, especially the LGBTQ+ community, the BIPOC community, women, and all other oppressed groups.
From where we're sitting, the people most like Jesus are the people on the left side of politics.
